Giant Bubble Recipe
In the Spring, Tim and I decided that I was going to be a full-time, stay-at-home mom. With Summer right around the corner, I found myself pretty excited about the fun activities Zara and I were going to do. I envisioned fun trips to the park, long bike rides, visiting splash pads & museums and long days by the pool. It was decided, we were gonna have a blast!
Then summer happened...and with it came triple digit heat.
Fast-forward a few weeks and I realized that I may have romanticized our activities a bit. The playground equipment was scorching hot & the pool quickly lost its allure. Not to mention all of the other moms are trying to relieve their cabin fever too, filling up indoor play spaces and splash pads with their tots in tow.
But now, it's getting cooler.
Yesterday was muggy and in the mid 70’s here in Fort Worth. With a break from the heat, I decided to try a new outdoor activity with Zara since it seems that she has played with every toy in her room. She was getting bored & boredom leads to trouble...
I remembered making gigantic bubbles in preschool and started looking up ways to recreate them. I finally found one from Happy Hooligans. The instructions mentioned that this activity would be great for a humid, overcast day--making it a perfect day to give it a shot!
I needed to re-up on a few household items, so I got Z in the car and headed to Walmart. I grabbed everything on the list and realized I had no clue where Glycerine would be and I really didn’t want to buy KY Jelly to make bubbles. (Que Grace & Frankie theme song). I found the Glycerine in the pharmacy section next to the band-aids. PTL!
While Zara was taking a nap, I whipped up two and a half batches of the bubble solution in our cooler. I let the solution sit for a couple of hours until Tim got home from work. Once he got home, we loaded up the car and headed to our neighborhood park.
It started pouring as soon as we pulled into the parking lot.
My heart sank a little. I had spent the morning getting Z so excited about "bubble time", that I didn't consider the odds of it raining. Tim, always one to find a solution, suggested that we find a pavilion to play in since Zara had her little heart set on blowing bubbles. We settled on Panther Island Pavilion -it was perfect! A nice covered place for Zara to play and an inspiring place for me to practice with my new camera.
We unloaded the car and filled Zara’s plastic pool with the solution. We brought a variety of makeshift bubble wands to see what worked best. A toddler hula hoop and an embroidery hoop were our favorites!
It was slow going at first, but the more we played with the solution, the more it firmed up a bit to create ENORMOUS bubbles. Z loved every minute; Tim and I had fun, too!
Bubbles are a super easy and affordable activity to do with your family during this muggy weather. Let me know if you try it out!
INGREDIENTS:
- 6 cups water (distilled is best but tap water is fine)
- 1/2 cup blue Dawn dish detergent I used “ultra concentrated”. Dawn original is even better.
- 1/2 cup corn starch (corn flour in the UK)
- 1 tbsp baking powder (not baking soda)
- 1 tbsp Glycerine (or, ahem, personal lubricant)
MAKING YOUR HOMEMADE GIANT BUBBLE RECIPE:
- Dissolve cornstarch in the water, stirring really well.
- Stir in the remaining ingredients being very careful not to create a lot of froth. .
- Allow your mixture to sit for at least an hour, stirring occasionally when you see the cornstarch settling to the bottom.
